Donny and Marie Star Wars

Donny and Marie Star Wars

Jun 22

How did this stay dormant so long? While the Star Wars Holiday Special survived in legend, lore, and VHS bootlegs for years, Donny and Marie’s Star Wars tribute episode of their variety show apparently sat in some basement somewhere. I wouldn’t call myself the biggest Star Wars fan out there, but I’m no lightweight, Han-come-lately, and this was new to me. Did I miss out? Was there a memo? Or is this truely, out-of-the-blue new?

Suffice to say that, for all its Donny and Marie glitz, it can’t hold a candle to the effects and set-filled Holiday Special. It parallels it in so many ways, inviting Paul Lynde to be an Imperial Commander and sing a tune about rockets. Kris Kristopherson stands in as Han. And just to blow your mind, Chewie, R2, and C3PO are loaned out, giving the event a certain thumbs-up from 20th Century Fox, if not George Lucas himself. One might say the Donny and Marie tribute makes the Holiday Special look like Empire Strikes Back.

Warning: You can’t un-see this, so bear that in mind before you press play.

It really busts my dilithium crystals that this movie is real one universe over (possibly the evil one in Fringe. The pricks.)

But that said, it’s a really clever trailer. And really, not sold on their real pick for Green Lantern.

Just how funny will the Ghostbusters video game be?

Just how funny will the Ghostbusters video game be?

Very funny.

In fact, I’m going to go out on a limb and say this will be one of the funniest games around, rivaled only by, oh, let’s say the Sam and Max games, or the Penny Arcade games. And they don’t have comedy legends Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Bill Murray hamming it up.

Alert Nerd sibling-site, Proton Charging, in conjunction with This Week in Geek and GameHeroes, has an exclusive look at the game, including one really funny cinematic (from the first mission of the game – if this is the start of the game…)

A sound that could kill someone

Office chatter turned into YouTube scouring today, ending at last with the Kate Bush video for Experiment IV, wherein a very young Hugh Laurie, Dawn French, and slightly younger Slartibartfast have their experiments in music twisted into a weapon by the British military. A very 80s theme. And as a video, it’s practically a mini-movie, complete with some effects lifted from Ghostbusters and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

This video just goes to show that all rock stars are nerds. Doesn’t matter what kind of music they make, they’re all giant geeks.

This is why it’s always a good idea to scour the quarter bins at your local comic shop. Howard the Duck, issue #12, vol.1, last page…

…KISS possessing the body of a young woman. In a comic where an anthropomorphic, taxi-cab driving duck is the titular star. That’s a heart-stopping dose of awesome, right there.

People thay to me, "Paul Thtanley" and I sez, "Whut?"
